Leave No Trace - Sarah Meurle
EXCERPT OF ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY SARAH MEURLE IN ISSUE #5
“Leave no trace behind” is a key phrase when it comes to living by the Swedish law of Allemansrätten, which translates to “all mans right” or “right of public access”. Basically it means you can camp anywhere for a night or two, as long as you respect the land and leave it as untouched as possible.
Skaters are not particularly known for leaving places untouched. If a trick has been battled at a spot, there are usually signs to show for it. Wallride arches, waxed up ledges and rails, marks made by four wheels repeatedly hitting the ground. Sometimes, even traces of blood. A lot of times, a beer can or two. You can almost smell the trick that has been done, but did they land it?
We look for signs. We wonder what’s been done here before and assess the clues in our presence, as if following the pawprints of an animal in the snow or figuring out the origin of the poop found upon a hike.
